History



Club “Economika 2000” is the successor of the Club of the Young economist at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The Club of the Young Economist was established in 1977 as an informal union of young research fellows at the Institute. The mission of the Club of the Young Economist was to encourage revolutionary thinking and to provoke innovative ideas in society. One of the traditional activities of the Club of the Young Economist was to organize International Summer Schools. At the beginning, the seminars were attractive place for leading economic researchers from the former communist countries and over the years they also attracted researchers from countries with a developed market economy. Among the most famous participants were Prof. M. Tardosh (Hungary), J.Flemming (Great Britain), Prof. M.Dabrovski (Poland), Prof. J.Haskle (Great Britain), Acad. E.Mateev (Bulgaria).


The Club of the Young Economist also used other forms of research and creative transfer of unorthodox ideas, such as the ECOMO Seminar, organized by Rositsa Rangelova, PhD and Radka Ileva, PhD.


Famous Bulgarian economists were representatives of the management or members of the Club of the Young Economist:


Krasimir Lakov, PhD - former President of the Club, famous economics journalist, former Department  Manager in “Free Europe” radio station in Prague, nowadays he is an economics journalist;


Assoc. Prof. Todor Radev, PhD - former President of the Club, consultant and researcher, nowadays he is Dean of the Varna University of Management;


Prof. Stefan Petranov, PhD - former President of the Club, consultant and researcher, nowadays he is lecturer at the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”;


Prof. Plamen Chipev, PhD - former President of the Club, consultant and researcher, nowadays he is Professor at the Economic Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences;


Prof. Garabed Minassian, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, former member of Bulgarian National Bank Governing Council, nowadays he is a professor at the Economic Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences;


Prof. Jordan Hristoskov, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, former Governor of the National Social Security Institute, Bulgaria, nowadays he is a Professor at Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski”;


Ventzislav Dimitrov, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, former deputy, former Economic Adviser of the President of Republic of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov;


Assoc. Prof. Rumen Avramov, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, nowadays he is a researcher at the Academic Research Institute;


Assoc. Prof. Boyan Slavenkov - former Executive Board member of the Club, Economic Adviser of the President of Republic of Bulgaria Zhelyo Zhelev, nowadays he is a lecturer in Economics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and Plovdiv University "Paisiy Hilendarski";


Svilen Parvulov - former Executive Board member of the Club, now enterprenuer;


Hristo Pamukchiev, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, now enterprenuer;


Victor Yotzov, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, nowadays he is  assistant professor at the Economic Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and lecturer at New Bulgarian University;


Valentin Karabashev - former Club member, Minister of commerce from Prof. L. Berov’s Government, former Executive Director of Bulland Investments and Sentinel Asset Management;


Prof. Vesselin Minchev, PhD - former Executive Board member of the Club, former Economic Policy Secretary of the President of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov, nowadays he is Deputy Director of the Economic Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences;


Diana Pisheva, PhD - former Club member, nowadays she is lecturer in Economics at different American universities.


Shortly after the democratic changes in Bulgaria, on October 5th 1990, Club "Economika 2000" was registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation at the Sofia City Court Register.
